A Pirate's Life For Me!

Our pirate unit had us shivering with delight!

Our literacy center featured,
How I Became A Pirate and Pirates Go To School.

The children also wrote "non-fiction" facts about pirates.

In math we worked on subtraction using treasure coins and
we worked on addition facts to build our own pirate ship.

In art we constructed these fierce looking
pirates that were in need of a shave!

We also created these fabulous pirates!

"Shiver me timber"

We walked the plank!
(I forgot to take pictures of this but the children LOVED it!)
AND
we went on a treasure hunt!

Here's the "BOOTY"
as in PIRATE BOOTY!

We listened to Pirate music and ended our week with a fun pirate snack.
The Grave's Family provided these awesome cupcakes.

and T. Alicia provided
BLOODY SKELETON ICE CUBES!

It was a perfectly, perfect ending to our busy Mother's Day week.
Next week:
Farm Unit!

  4. Hello it's me again. I just posted on you dino page. I have almost the same questions but it doesn't hurt to ask again, right. I love you centers. I have all those books and would love to do something differet this school year. Can you explain the tables to me. I love the crossbones and are those the Veggitales? What are the swords used for. Look at me I'm like one of your students just wanting to suck up the knowledge. Also can you please tell me where you found the worksheets. Those are awesome. I am in no way computer savvy and I have to search online for any printable worksheets. I will one of these days learn though. Thank you for being so patient and letting me rant. God Bless. 5. Hi There,

Thank you for your questions about my classroom blog. I haven't updated my blog in over a year but hope to get back to blogging this fall.

Just to give you some background about myself, I have been teaching K for 23 years. It's a job I absolutely adore. Because I have been teaching so long, I have accumulated a ton of "stuff".

Just to give you answers to some of your questions, let me first address what the table is with the flannel boards and books.
I call it the "literacy center". It changes EVERY week depending on what letter we are on or theme we are working on. I make lots of "puppets" for acting out stories and finger plays during morning meeting. I provide props for the children to re tell stories on their own.
Most of the items are made from fun foam. There are kits for sale at Michael's in various themes.
I also use a die cut machine to make shapes, characters, manipulative to enhance the units. I put velcro on the back of all the puppets and shapes i make. that way they can be used on a flannel board or adhered to a tongue depressor allowing for more versatility. I also include real objects wherever possible...ex. Fresh vegetables for V Week.

You asked specifically about the dinosaur egg. That was purchased at Cracker Barrel...weird, I know, but truly I just keep my eye out ALL THE TIME for cool things to use in my classroom. The Dollar Tree is my favorite. It is a great resource for all kinds of fun things. Use your imagination. Anything can be used as a tool to encourage language development and creative playing.
The large black buckets are for sensory activities. I buried dinosaur "bones" and plastic eggs with dinosaurs inside. The children "excavated" the eggs and bones using shovels. Providing googles makes it even more realistic. I also froze dinosaurs in huge blocks of ice for excavation.

As you can imagine, the set up this requires is very time consuming. I am committed to providing a hands on learning environment. Children Learn when they get to experience everything using all their senses.

You asked about curriculum worksheets and wanted to let you know that I have written and designed my own curriculum based of the district objectives. I am at a private school so I have the luxury of doing things "my way". I realize my circumstances are not the norm. However, every classroom would benefit from more hands on activities.

My best advice is try, try, and try again. My classroom has evolved over the years and is still a work in progress. Providing a literature rich, child friendly, hands on environment is my top priority. It is my passion. It is what I love.

    I hope this helps.
I know you may still have questions.
I hope you have a wonderful day.
Thank you for your interest in my "little world"!
